Sparc Hydrogen has achieved sustained hydrogen generation at its first-of-a-kind pilot facility in South Australia, marking a breakthrough for direct solar-to-hydrogen production. The Roseworthy site, built at the University of Adelaide campus, uses a photocatalytic water-splitting (PWS) process that channels solar energy directly into splitting water molecules—without the need for electricity or electrolysers. Backed by Fortescue and Sparc Technologies, the project is seen as a potential path to low-cost, distributed green hydrogen.
